It has been announced by the Federal Government that the launch of the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) subclass 870 visa will commence 17 April 2019.
The new visa program will allow as many as 15,000 parents of citizens and permanent residents to come to Australia each year. The Minister for Immigration, David Coleman, said that the new visa will deliver positive social benefits to Australia’s migrant communities.
“Up to 15,000 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visas may be granted each year, ensuring reunions are possible for many families,” Coleman said. “This will make a big difference to many Australian families.”
Applying for the new visa will be a two-step process
Applications for the visa itself will only be made available from 1 July 2019.
Parents of migrants will be able to apply for a three-year visa for $5,000 or a five-year visa for $10,000, with the opportunity for a single five-year renewal at the same price.
The Department of Immigration have also confirmed that there will be no Balance of Family test, although “no work” conditions will be applied.
Only two parents per household will be eligible for sponsorship, which the department claims is intended to ensure that more families across Australia have the opportunity to sponsor a parent.
Measures will be in place to strengthen the visa framework, and require Australian sponsors to act as a financial guarantor for any outstanding public health costs incurred by the visa holder whilst in Australia, including hospital and aged care fees. This ensures taxpayers are not required to cover additional costs.
